The Mental Health Challenge for Business Owners

During our discussion, Dr. Harris emphasized that many business owners face significant stress and burnout without recognizing its impact on their mental health. The constant pressures of running a business can create feelings of isolation, especially for first-generation entrepreneurs who lack a supportive network of peers who understand their journey.

“Most first-generation business owners experience moral disengagement,” she explained. “Running a small business can be lonely, and when family and friends don’t understand the unique challenges of entrepreneurship, business owners often feel isolated. This isolation makes it difficult to discuss their struggles, ultimately affecting their mental well-being.” 😞

Recognizing the Signs of Distress

Dr. Harris outlined key signals that might indicate mental health challenges:

  • Loss of Interest: If you find yourself no longer enjoying activities you used to love.
  • Isolation: Withdrawing from social interactions or business networks.
  • Emotional Strain: Experiencing moral injury, where your actions become inconsistent with your values and you feel overwhelmed.

If you notice these signs, it may be time to reassess your mental health and seek support. 🆘

Tune in to watch this important conversation where Dr. Harris discusses these unique challenges, including systemic issues like discrimination and limited access to resources—and how to overcome them.
